College Hockey America Names Player Awards For Feb. 10, 2004

All three of this week’s College Hockey America Women award winners are previous winners, including a pair of Findlay Oilers, who have been honored multiple times this season. Findlay senior Heidi Tallqvist is being honored for the third time this season as the league’s offensive player of the week. Meanwhile, freshman teammate Laura Monk receives her third rookie of the week honor in the last five weeks.

Joining the Findlay duo is Mercyhurst’s Danielle Lansing. The sophomore defenseman is being honored as the league’s defensive player of the week for the second time this season.

Offensive Player of the Week
Heidi Tallqvist, Findlay, Junior, Forward, Turku, Finland
With two goals on the weekend, Tallqvist becomes the first CHAW player to top the 20-goal mark in a season. She assisted on a pair of power-play goals in Friday’s 4-2 win over Niagara and her 20th goal of the season proved to be the game winner. Tallqvist turned in another three-point effort in Saturday’s 4-3 win, including her nation-leading 11th power-play goal of the season. Along with a pair of assists, she set a league season-high with 13 shots on goal. In 10 games since Jan. 1, Tallqvist has totalled 11 goals, 21 points and a plus/minus rating of +8. She has recorded at least eight shots on goal in seven of those 10 games. Her 76 shots on goal in those 10 games are more than all but five players in the league have taken this season.
Other nominees: Teresa Marchese-Del Monte, Mercyhurst; Lindsay Vine, Niagara.

Defensive Player of the Week
Danielle Lansing, Mercyhurst, Sophomore, Defense, Red Deer, Alberta
Lansing’s second award of the season comes on the heels of the Lakers’ stellar defensive effort, which saw them shutout Wayne State twice while limiting the Warriors to 25 shots on goal in 6-0 and 3-0 wins. Not only did she anchor a stellar defensive unit, which also held Wayne State scoreless on nine powerplay chances, Lansing contributed to Mercyhurst’s offense with a goal and two assists. Friday, she set up one of the Lakers’ three power-play goals and scored another herself before chipping in to Saturday’s win with an assist.
Other nominees: Bradi Cochrane, Niagara; Hilary Foord, Findlay.

Rookie of the Week
Laura Monk, Findlay, Freshman, Forward, Mississauga, Ontario
Monk continued to pile up the points with a five-point weekend in 4-2 and 4-3 wins over Niagara, moving her to the top of the nation’s rookie scoring charts with 1.33 points per game. In her last eight games, Monk has recorded seven multiple-point games, tallying six goals and 17 points during that time. Since returning from a six-game absence due to an injury, she has seven goals and 20 points in 11 games. Friday, Monk scored a pair of power-play goals, added an assist and totalled seven shots on goal, en route to being named the game’s first star. She followed that performance with a goal and an assist in Sunday’s win, completing the weekend sweep which moved the Oilers into second place in the CHAW standings.
Other nominees: Stefanie Bourbeau, Mercyhurst; Allison Rutledge, Niagara.
