College Hockey America Player Awards for Feb. 9, 2004
[2003-04 Players of the Week]

All three of this week’s College Hockey America award winners are previous honorees this season, led by offensive player of the week Barret Ehgoetz, who is being honored for the third time this season. He’s joined on the awards list this week by teammate Jeff VanNynatten, the defensive player of the week, and rookie of the week Brian Gineo of Air Force, both of whom are being honored for the second time this season.

Offensive Player of the Week
Barret Ehgoetz, Niagara, Junior, Center, Kincardine, Ontario
With two goals in Friday’s 4-1 win over Wayne State, Ehgoetz became just the fourth player in CHA history to record 50 career goals, reaching that plateau in 93 games, faster than any other player. His goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win moved him into a tie for third on the league’s all-time goal-scoring list. Friday, Ehgoetz scored the game’s first goal on the power play and his second goal put the finishing touches on the 4-1 victory. Saturday, he scored his second short-handed goal of the season and also added an assist. On the season, Ehgoetz ranks second nationally in points (42) and fourth in goals (21), leading the conference in both categories.
Other nominees: Brendan Cook, Bemidji State; Spanky Leonard, Air Force; Brett McConnachie, Alabama-Huntsville; David Vogt, Findlay.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jeff VanNynatten, Niagara, Sophomore, Goalie, Stratford, Ontario
VanNynatten earned his first career shutout Saturday and stopped 52 of 53 shots on the weekend in leading Niagara to 4-1 and 3-0 wins over Wayne State. The shutout came via a 24-save effort Saturday and followed Friday night’s win in which he turned aside 28 of 29 shots. He is unbeaten in his last eight decisions (6-0-2) and has been the goalie of record in each game during the Purple Eagles’ current five-game unbeaten streak. With the victories, VanNynatten is the league’s winningest goalie overall with 12 victories and his winning percentage of .711 ranks ninth nationally. His record in CHA games is a perfect 9-0-0.
Other nominees: Peter Foster, Air Force; Will Hooper, Findlay; Grady Hunt, Bemidji State; Adam MacLean, Alabama-Huntsville.

Rookie of the Week
Brian Gineo, Air Force, Freshman, Defense, Windsor, Conn.
With the Falcons trailing 1-0 through 55 minutes of play Saturday, and on the verge of being swept at home by Findlay, Gineo stepped to fore to lead his team to a 2-1 victory. After scoring his first career goal Oct. 25, it took Gineo 22 games to notch his second goal, which came on the power play with 4:08 remaining in the final period. However, he need just 53 seconds to score his third goal and enable Air Force to earn a split of its two-game series and retain possession of fourth place in the CHA standings.
Other nominees: Sean Bentivoglio, Niagara; Brett McConnachie, Alabama-Huntsville; Justin Perry, Findlay; Layne Sedevie, Bemidji State.
