College Hockey America names weekly player awards for Jan. 12

Last week’s rookie of the week, Niagara freshman goalie Allison Rutledge, was
named College Hockey America’s defensive player of the week while Mercyhurst sophomore forward
Samantha Shirley and Findlay freshman forward Laura Monk were also honored by the league this week.

Offensive Player of the Week
Samantha Shirley, Mercyhurst, Sophomore, Forward, Mississauga, Ontario
Last year’s CHA rookie of the year, Shirley earned her third player of the week award by leading Mercyhurst to a 3-2 win over Providence and a 2-2 tie with No. 8 New Hampshire. Shirley scored the first goal in each game and had a hand in both goals Sunday versus the Wildcats, scoring one and assisting on the other. For the weekend, she had three points, four shots on goal and a plus/minus rating of +2.

Defensive Player of the Week
Allison Rutledge, Niagara, Freshman, Goalie, London, Ontario
Rutledge, who has been named CHA rookie of the week twice this season, earns her second defensive player of the week honor after stopping 62 of 66 shots, allowing just one even-stregth goal, in a 1-0 loss to New Hampshire and a 3-0 loss to Providence. While her team went scoreless, Rutledge stopped UNH’s first 24 shots before giving up the game’s lone goal with 13:30 to play. The following day, she kept Providence off the scoreboard for 25 minutes before succumbing to the Friars’ onslaught. Providence recorded 33 shots over the final two periods, 14 of which came of five power-play chances, and scored all three of its goals on the power play.

Rookie of the Week
Laura Monk, Findlay, Freshman, Forward, Mississauga, Ontario
Monk recorded three points as the Oilers recorded a 5-2 win at Wayne State to move to within one point of the second-place Warriors. She scored the first goal of the game, giving her team a 1-0 lead after one period, and closed out the game with a power-play tally with 4:55 to play while record eight shots on goal.
